Ontario Residents Encouraged Get Active During Winter Months

TORONTO, Dec. 18 /CNW/ - Active living is a key ingredient for good health during these winter months and throughout the new year, says Health Promotion Minister Margarett Best.

Start with a winter plan

Plan to add more physical activity into your lifestyle, but be realistic - use small, gradual steps to ensure success. Active living is the time tested and scientifically proven method to improve your health. Make a plan, set a schedule and involve friends or loved ones. Activity ideas and planners are available online at www.healthyontario.com other websites. "More than ever before Ontarians are looking for ways to increase their physical activity levels and remain healthy," said Best. "I encourage all Ontarians to make the commitment to a healthier lifestyle one step at a time."

Make Outdoor Tracks on the Trails

Ontario has over 64,000 kilometres of snowshoe & cross-country ski trails. Let the weather be your guide in deciding just where to hike or snowshoe your way in the great outdoors. For more information go to http://www.hikeontario.com

Pedometer Challenge

Join the pedometer challenge. Besides being an enjoyable and often scenic mode of transportation, putting your best foot forward can improve your fitness, health and sense of well-being. To join the pedometer challenge go to www.active2010.ca and click on the blue pedometer at the bottom of the page. Set a goal to accumulate 10,000 steps a day.

Physical Activity in Winter
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em! Whether you're a fan of the white stuff or not, it'll be hard for many of us to avoid the snow this winter. Kick off your holidays by embracing the season and taking part in some winter fitness. Try the following activities and remember to wear a helmet. Winter has much to offer - get out there and enjoy the season! Strap on those skates Whether you're skating on a rink, a lake, or canal, make the most of the Ontario outdoor skating season. It's part of Ontario's winter landscape! If you do skate on lakes, canals, or other natural bodies of water, remember that ice can be unpredictable and that you should always check with local authorities in advance about how safe it is to skate on.

Hit the slopes-Snowtub, toboggan, ski, board

Snowboarding, downhill skiing, tobogganing... slopes of varying grades provide hours of fun. Ski hills offer ski and snowboard lessons for everyone from beginner level onwards, so the whole family can get involved. And an afternoon of tobogganing can get the heart pumping and the laughter roaring. What better way to top off the holidays?

Ski cross-country

Whether you live in an urban or rural setting, Ontario has a wealth of nearby parks and trails just waiting to be explored. Before you venture out, familiarize yourself with appropriate safety precautions. Contact your local cross-country ski organization for more details.

Walk in Winter Wonderland

Slow down the often hectic holiday pace and take in the beauty the season has to offer. The Ministry of Health Promotion wishes everyone a healthy, active and happy 2008.
